gamma films - scatola a sorpresa

That's what the Berberian Sound Studio must have been like with good working conditions and happy staff, before it all went Giallo...

I stumbled upon the name Roberto Gavioli in a 1971 issue of Graphis magazine and was happy to find a promo of his Gamma Film studio in Milan on YouTube. It seems to have been an important studio for animation film, especially for commercials. Check the reel below, especially the last bit, starting at 18:42 minutes, a pop culture exploitation ad for a washing machine if I got that right.



Update: I found some additional information on the first film on the website of the Museum of Industry and Labour in Brescia, Italy, where the estate of Gamma Film seems to be. The film, called "Jack in a box", was made in 1963 to promote the studio complex "Cinelandia". Over 200 people used to work there. It was not only an important animation film studio. Furthermore, many famous Italian bands and musicians recorded there. Sadly, the studio complex is used by one of Berlusconi's TV production companies.

Two beach parties with Morricone soundtracks

Summer's over here in Central Europe. I hope you all had your beach parties and/or processions, hopefully with good soundtracks.

I found out about "Adonai" through James Cargill's excellent mix for The Outer Church in the context of his soundtrack for Peter Strickland's new film "Berberian Sound Studio" (and I was pleased to find out that apparently my TV ident month seems to have found its way into this mix).

The italian publishing house Mondadori seems to have had a great past including amazing graphic design and headquarters by Oscar Niemeyer. Today it's owned by Berlusconi.

I've had this activity book (in a rather indecisive German edition that somewhat tries to de-radicalize the original) since I was a kid. I've been attracted/fascinated/annoyed/scared by de Santis' illustrations ever since.

My statistics say that you like Giampiero Boneschi - this post was the most popular post of this blog last year. So why not start the new year with two other bits from one of his records on the rather unknown "Broadway" library label, the guitar&synth-themed "Musical Fantasy n°3". "Allemande Guitar" is the outstanding track here (think of robots with baroque wigs), but I'm also a big fan of the addictive little melody and the laid back disco groove of "Crazy Guitar". Enjoy and have a good start into 2011!

A Normal Day - The Giampiero Boneschi Group

This post on the extraordinarily great toys & techniques blog made me re-check my records from the italian library music label Broadway. They released several records by Giampiero Boneschi, one of the big heroes of italian library music. His "A Normal Day" that I mentioned in my comment on t&t seems to be pretty unknown, so here's some information and sound snippets from some tracks. The catalogue number is BW 13091. All titles by Giampiero Boneschi & Sergio Farina. "A Normal Day" is a hilarious title for this rather far out music. Also, track titles like "terrorism", "delicate mission" or "it's dangerous" don't exactly sound like a normal day to me (I'm not a secret agent though).
