Hooray For Reading

Hooray For Reading was a "series of ten, minute-long shorts created by Field Communications for children. These would air during the commercial breaks on kid's shows and cartoons. These featured kids briefly doing some other activity besides reading (the "hook") and then describing a book they like using a brief dramatization of a part in the story."
I found these in the Museum of Classic Chicago TV on FuzzyMemories.tv, an enormous collaborative archive of off-air recordings of American television.

TV ident month II: Circles

The German station ZDF used to broadcast this intro before showing horror and fantasy movies in their series "der phantastische Film" they started in 1970. The animation was made by none other than Heinz Edelmann (of Yellow Submarine fame).

The Monitors

I had the pleasure to meet Dave Tompkins last weekend, whom I had invited for a lecture at a festival that I co-founded a few years ago. I highly recommend his book How To Wreck A Nice Beach that tells the story of the vocoder from World War II to Hip-Hop with loads of fascinating detours.

If you ever chat with Dave, don't forget your notebook. I'm glad that I wrote down the name of the above clip which not only has a Bruce Haack meets Basil Kirchin soundtrack feat. a pretty early use of the vocoder (here's the clip with better sound but worse image), but is also a nice late entry to my TV-ident month from this spring.

I decided that the extended TV ident month is over. TV idents might be a part of the regular programme here on the dispokino channel in the future, but for now we say goodnight with the ident for the kid's bed-time-story programme from Swiss TV (1970ies) and the melancholic French closing ident of Antenne 2 (1975-83), drawings by Folon, Music by Michel Colombier.

TV ident month: Aleksandra Domanović's Yugoslavian news idents project

In her project 19:30, Yugoslavian born artist Aleksandra Domanović explores the history of the TV news of the geographic region of ex-Yugoslavia. It includes an anthology of ident music, remixes, a video and a series of parties.
Aleksandra Domanović, who grew up in Slovenia, draws on her experience of wartime Yugoslavia when everyone throughout the entire country would gather at 19.30 in front of the TV to watch the main news and check out the latest developments. The music that once announced the news today triggers memories of that period. Following the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the former regional channels became the national channels of the new nation states. Their signature tunes often contain martial or nationalist elements.
In the aftermath of war, techno parties offered people a chance to dance and leave nationalism behind them. In remixes, parties and a video, Domanović mixes and explores these connotations of TV news  and post-war Techno culture.

TV ident month: Brazilian Telenovelas

While browsing through telenovela idents, I also stumbled upon this fantastic Psyché Rock rip off (and one can never have enough Psyché Rock rip offs).

TV ident month: exclusive Bruno Spoerri stuff

Swiss electronic music pionneer and jazzman Bruno Spoerri  - among many other things - composed, played and recorded the music for over 500 TV ads and for many TV idents. I got hold of two fine examples he made for Swiss national broadcast.

"Wer gwünnt?" was a very popular quiz show that was broadcasted from 1973-1977. Bruno Spoerri's title music can be found on the Spoerri-compilation "Glückskugel"  that Finders Keepers records released in 2006 (needless to say that this record is a must-have). An excerpt from the show with jingles by Spoerri can be found here.

The second video is the ident for "Schulfernsehen"(educational TV) from 1982. It made me a Spoerri fan approx. 20 years before I heard his name.
