At the Maison d'Ailleurs

The Maison d'Ailleurs, the Museum of science fiction, utopia and extraordinary voyages in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland is based on the collection of Pierre Versins, who donated his tens of thousands of science fiction books, comic books and many other sci-fi related documents to the city in the 1970s. Central parts of the collection are the work of Jules Verne, French series of Sci-Fi books, but also American pulp novels.
I had the pleasure to accompany my friend Dave Tompkins on a research mission to their book collection. We had very little time, but I'm glad I sneaked away from the study desk to take some pics of amazing covers.

Vashti Bunyan - Love Song
plastic moonrise - The Rapid Rain

Tündérkaszinó - A part alatt
Die Welttraumforscher - This Could Be the Greatest Love in Town
Brenda Ray - The Scream
Solfeggio Tones - Solfeggio 396 417 528 639

The Bruno Spoerri track is the intro for a Swiss fairy tale record. The René Eespere song comes from the fantastic Estonian Teeme Muusikat series I got to know through several posts on toys and techniques. All tracks come from vinyl records except the wonderful electronic poems of Catherine Norris (plastic moonrise) and the mathematic melodies of Solfeggio Tones which I found on Soundcloud. Frédéric Chanu's Prends le temps d'écouter was made in a Freinet school. Tom Gagnaire from the Shapes and Colors blog had the wonderfully insane idea to make a reissue of this 7" of music composed and played by children. Well, since you read this blog you probably don't find the idea insane at all and you should order the record through the Tona Serenad label. There's more to come, I'll keep you posted. While you're at it, you should also order the Welttraumforscher's This Could Be the Greatest Love in Town (originally released on cassette in 1987) on 7" that was recently released in the context of the Welttraumforscher retrospective and book I organised.

Louise's apartment

Louise, the main character in Eric Rohmer's les nuits de la pleine lune (1984), is an interior designer who renovates her flat in Paris during the movie (to escape the life in the suburbs with her boyfriend basically). In one scene, her friend (whom she suspects of having an affair with her boyfriend) brings her a Memphis catalogue as a souvenir from Milan. Complicated love and interior design.
Furniture credited to Michel Cadestin, Michel Toraille and Lucas Hillen.

Série vie des hommes: à la maison (Auvidis)

Auvidis made two (or more?) peculiar and probably not very practical series of 7" library records: On one side, it's sound fx and noises, on the other side, it's tiny bits of music mixed with the sounds.
I recently found most of the "Série nature" (check some of them over at Toys and Techniques) and one record from "Série vie des hommes" (life of man), "à la maison" (at home).
Please note the manual on how to extend the tiny pieces by slicing tape, mixing or overdubbing.
Here's side B:

Le soleil est arrivé

"The sun has arrived / the birds are having fun [...] / the kids play outside / the dads work on their construction sites, whistling / the sun came back, summer is here"

I just spent two wonderfully sunny summer weeks in the Swiss mountains and can't think of a better way to celebrate this and summer in general (before autumn comes) than by playing you this song by the 9-year old Gérard who luckily went to Freinet school in 1971. He sings and plays metallophone on his song, accompanied by Marc and Roger, same age, on percussion and xylophone. An incredible record of kids avantgarde, played on Orff instruments, rubber bands and knives-on-the-edge-of-desks. Definitely one of my finds of the year. More of this would probably really have led to socialism (of the good sort).

Good night TV ident month

I decided that the extended TV ident month is over. TV idents might be a part of the regular programme here on the dispokino channel in the future, but for now we say goodnight with the ident for the kid's bed-time-story programme from Swiss TV (1970ies) and the melancholic French closing ident of Antenne 2 (1975-83), drawings by Folon, Music by Michel Colombier.

freakbeat jésus boy band choirs...

...were totally mainstream in continental Europe (and Québec, of course) in the Seventies.
